Nairobi County Assembly members have called on the county government to allocate funds for the purchase of condoms. The MCAs, who spoke during the appropriation of the 2023/24 budget, said that while nearly Ksh50 million had been set aside for sanitary pads, a significant amount should also be allocated for condoms.
“In the future, when you allocate Ksh50 million for women’s pads, something should be set aside for condoms for men to protect themselves,” said Peter Imwatok, the Majority Leader of the Assembly. “As leaders, we need to show people how to be safe by providing funding for preventive measures.”
Emily Smell, the Chairperson of the Finance Committee, assured the MCAs that their concerns would be addressed in the next budget. “The concerns raised by our male colleagues have been well-received and we want to assure them that we have just begun. All of their interests will be addressed appropriately,” she said.
The MCAs have allocated nearly Ksh1 billion in the budget for the health sector. This includes funding for the purchase of condoms, as well as other preventive measures such as HIV testing and counseling.
The MCAs’ call for funding for condoms is a welcome step in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Condoms are an effective way to prevent the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
