How to Acquire a Firearm in Kenya
- You will be required to pay between ksh 160 000 to 350 000
- You must be at least 21 years old
- You will need a certificate of good conduct
The process of acquiring a firearm in Kenya is governed by the Firearms Act, Cap. 114. The Act sets out the requirements for obtaining a firearm certificate, which is the document that allows you to own and possess a firearm in Kenya.
To acquire a firearm in Kenya, you must first apply for a firearm certificate at any police station in Kenya. The application form can be obtained from the police station or downloaded from the website of the Firearms Licensing Board.

Your application for a firearm certificate must be accompanied by the following supporting documentation:
- A copy of your identification document (ID or passport)
- A certificate of good conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI)
- A psychiatric report from a government hospital
- A tax compliance certificate (TCC)
- A 6-month bank statement
Your application for a firearm certificate will be vetted by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and the Firearms Licensing Board. The vetting process will assess your suitability to own a firearm, including your criminal record, mental health, and financial status.

If your application is approved, you will be issued with a firearm certificate. The certificate is valid for a period of one year and must be renewed annually.
