Since the fruit may be exported, local farmers stand to earn enormous profits because they do not have to sell their products at low rates to brokers who enrich their coffers by gaining from other people’s sweat.

A mature Hass tree may yield an average of 500 fruits every cycle, and each fruit at farm gate pricing retails at KES 10 on the low end. An acre with 5m by 5m spacing may accommodate 150 trees. This naturally translates to:

75,000 fruits = 150 trees * 500 fruits

75,000 fruits * Ksh.10 = KES 750,000/-

Maximum Yield Per Tree

According to studies, most farmers lack the expertise and experience needed to properly cultivate Hass avocados to maturity and profit from them.

A farmer saves more than KES 40,000 per acre when he or she invests in the project by first consulting with experts.

This is what you might earn if you planted Hass avocado plants four years ago.

Records show most exporters purchase Hass fruits at average gate prices of KES 10 to Ksh 20 per fruit or Ksh 180 to Ksh 350 per 4kg box.

A typical farmer harvests between 200 and 500 fruits from a four-year-old tree.

A 10-year-old Hass plant produces around 1000 fruits.

Potential Profit

Check out the potential earnings from establishing a one-acre Hass avocado plantation under professional guidance.

We assumed a farmer selling at KES 8 per fruit and having an acre of 150 Hass avocado plants spaced 5m by 5m for the first 6 years, then gradually thinning Hass trees to 120 trees per acre beginning in the seventh year.

The first two years – growth stages two and three (harvest of 50 fruits per tree) – KES 60k in the fourth year (harvest 200-250 fruits) – KES 240k in the fifth year (350 fruits) – KES 420k in the sixth year (800 fruits) -KES 900,000 in the seventh year – (1000 fruits) – 1.08 million in the eighth year (1100 fruits) – KES 1.3 million in the ninth year (more than 1300 fruits) – 1.5m 10th year (over 1500 fruits) – KES 1.8million 11th year (over 1750 fruits) – 2million.

In ten years, you will have earned a total of KES ten million.
