Ambani’s statement
“It’s sad. It’s sad. When I first faced Mathare Utd, it was in a league match at Oserian grounds. What a match it was… Though we won the match 3-0 in a KPL encounter, it was a breathtaking one,” Ambani wrote.
The former player, known for his time at AFC Leopards and Harambee Stars, reflected on the memorable matches he had against Mathare United in various competitions. He recounted a President’s Cup encounter where both teams displayed their skills and determination.

“Simon Mulama, Titus Mulama, Kureshi, Alfy Chege, Evans Nyabaro, Fighter Ochieng, Shelimba, Asman Ngaiywa, Ochieng Duncan, Alex Mwangi aka Mwango, Coach Kimanzi… the list is endless,” Ambani nostalgically recalled, acknowledging the talented individuals who were part of Mathare United during that period.
Ambani also recognized the contributions of the late Jonathan Niva in molding the team into a formidable unit, with Bob Munro serving as the CEO. He acknowledged the team’s ups and downs over the years, leading to their unfortunate relegation from the top-flight league.
“Ups and downs in the club have seen fortunes dwindle, until now the team has been relegated. Will they bounce back from NSL? Time will tell,” Ambani pondered, expressing uncertainty about Mathare United’s future in the National Super League.

Ambani extended his sympathies to the team and its supporters, commonly referred to as the “Slum Boys.” He offered words of encouragement and solidarity during this challenging time.
