Kenya national rugby seven’s coach Damian McGrath has named his 12 man team that will feature in the next weekend’s Rugby World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa.
The team consists of expirienced set of players led by Kenya’s record try scorer Collins Injera with another bunch consisting of debutants.
Injera who missed the last week’s Los Angeles returns to the national guard alongside Willy Ambaka and Billy Odhiambo. Nelson Oyoo, the skipper comes in back to back call up with Samuel Oliech, Jeff Oluoch and Herman Humwa.
Players set to make their debut to the squad are Johnston Olindi, Vincent Onyala, Tony Omondi, Kevin Wekesa and Edmund Anya.
Speaking about the selection of the squad, The tactician said, “We’ve been hit by a number of withdrawals, not of our choosing. We’ve lost Alvin Otieno who has left the program to pursue personal interests which is a big blow because he is one of the world’s best seven’s forwards. We’ve lost Daniel Taabu and Bush Mwale for internal disciplinary matters which have been dealt with but necessitated them being left out of this particular squad. It’s a blow to the team but we are confident with the selected squad”, McGrath told the press.
Kenya will be appearing in RWC 7s for the sixth consecutive time since making a debut in 2001. Shujaa will play Tonga in their opening fixture in Cape Town.
McGrath revealed opened up on his decision to include veteran Collins Injera in the journey to Cape Town, South Africa. “ Collins brings expirience. He’s lived by it and done it, there’s not many players on the seven’s circuit who’ve done and achieved what Collins has, his influence in training is very good. He’s very good with the younger guys and he understands how seven’s should be played”, The Briton praised Injera .
