Omalla’s strike wraps Mashemeji derby in stalemate.

The 2022 Mashemeji derby pitting eternal rivals Gor Mahia FC and AFC Leopards ended up in a 1-1 draw in a tough contested match  staged at Kasarani on Sunday afternoon.

Leopards took the lead on the 29th minute through Victor Omune who found a nice set up from Peter Thiong’o beating K’ogalo keeper Gad Matthews who was out of the line, matters ending up 1-0 in favor of Ingwe.

The second half with Leopards making a substitution, Patrick Aussems withdrawing his team captain Eugene Mukangula for Nigerian import Ojo Olaniyi. Gor Mahia showing their power in attack, Boniface Omondi, Austin Odhiambo and Benson Omalla giving Ingwe defense a hard task but keeper Levis Opiyo was up to the task.

On the 51st minute, Gor pooled an equalizer via Benson Omalla after a mix-up from AFC backline, cancelling Omune’s opener to turn around AFC Leopards quest to end the six year winless streak against the record champions.

The derby attendance was extremely good with an approximate of 15,000 fans attended the fate including President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and sports cabinet secretary Ambassador Amina Mohammed.

The players who took part in the derby will have their pockets full as Kenya number one Uhuru Kenyatta has made a pledge to give each player from both teams Kshs 2M and a Kshs 10M to club’s Gor and AFC.
