The Mashemeji Derby pitting arch rivals Gor Mahia FC and AFC Leopards will go down this weekend at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi.

The Kenya’s most watched football fixture was earlier set to be played at the newly constructed Kenyatta International Stadium in Kisumu but it has been moved to it’s origin hood Nairobi in favour of both sides, K’ogalo and Ingwe.

The reason behind the earlier scheduling in Kisumu was because the host’s, Gor Mahia were suspended from playing their home league matches at Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums because of the damage that was caused by their fans at Kasarani back in February this year in their league tie against Vihiga Bullets FC.

The , commonly known as the Nairobi Derby, popularly known as Mashemeji Derby is the name of the teams AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia.

It is the oldest rivalry in Kenyan football history as it dates back to 1968 when the first derby was played with both sides being known as Luo Union FC (Gor Mahia) and Abaluhyia United FC (AFC Leopards).

Fans of both AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia (often referred to by their nicknames, Ingwe and K’ogalo respectively) recognize each other as arch rivals and their name “Mashemeji” came as a result of the Luhya community in Western kenya where most of Leopards fans come from and Dholuo or Luo, where most of Gor’s fanbase is intermarry as in-laws thus the name Mashemeji coming up.

Gor Mahia has won the Kenyan Premier League for a record 19 times, while AFC  Leopards have 13 league titles to their name as at now.

In the first leg of the 2021/22 season, Gor won 1-0 at the same venue over AFC last year with the lone goal being scored by Boniface Omondi.
