Kenyans, like other immigrants from throughout the world, travel to America in search of a better life.

Diana tells her friends who look down on ‘lowly occupations’ that these experiences make them stronger prospects when it comes time to hunt for a professional career after graduation. “It also makes you independent at a younger age,” adds the nursing student, “like the last time I asked my parents for money for my personal needs was when I was in high school.”

She earns about KES1,200 per hour and works for 30 hours a week, equating to KES72,000 every two weeks.

She spends the money on tithing, insurance, grocery shopping, and auto maintenance. She has never regretted taking on a challenge.

She claims that hers is a popular profession in America and that most students enjoy it since it allows them to study and do their homework. It’s a job that may be obtained by contacting employment agencies, and after a one-week training period, one is ready to work.

“Working while studying gives vital advantages that a student would not receive otherwise,” she says. “As long as the work does not interfere with your performance in class,” she adds, “working while studying delivers integral benefits that a student would not receive otherwise.”

Professor Robert Gacheru, Vice-Chancellor of Riara University, feels that there are several career opportunities for students to pursue. “Taking up side hustles is a fantastic idea because the current climate has offered endless options for students to earn money,” he adds.

“There are less demanding professions people can perform from the comfort of their own homes,” he adds, citing online writing gigs as an example.

Even though Mr Wanyonyi and a few other students accept work-study programs, many Kenyan students graduate from higher education institutions with no prior job experience.

The necessary industrial attachment participated in while in school is what most have to establish practical aptitude.

Students in the industrialized world, on the other hand, are not unusual to work while studying.

This is primarily owing to the high cost of living, particularly in large cities like London, New York, Berlin, or California, where colleges are located.

Students benefit from the flexibility of studying hours, which allows those who work to participate in evening programs.

However, he cautions that a side hustle might cause students to get distracted. This does not have to be the case.
