A family is mourning the death of a relative who died at Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital at the hands of medical personnel. Letizia Achieng, a pregnant 22-year-old, is said to have died as a result of medical incompetence at the Mbita sub-county hospital.

Mbita sub-county Hospital has been accused by Achieng’s family of failing to transfer her to the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital in a timely manner.

Bernard Ogango, one of the family members, said they arrived at Mbita Sub-county hospital around 1 a.m. from Sena, Mfanga’ano Island, for medication.

The woman’s health deteriorated three hours later when medics realized they were out of drugs to treat her.

The family also claims that the institution’s employees refused to allow her go, despite her brother’s request for a friend to come and transport her to another medical facility.

The ambulance was delayed until a friend with a private automobile offered to help transport Achieng’ to Homa Bay, according to the Star.

When the ambulance arrived, the driver informed them that the vehicle was out of petrol and demanded KSh 5,000 from the family.

The death, according to Ogango, was caused by the Mbita Sub-county Hospital.

When the woman was admitted to his facility, Peter Ogola, the CEO of Homa Bay Hospital stated, she had developed high blood pressure and low oxygen.
