President William Ruto has announced plans to construct a new airport in Kisii County, a project he says will be completed within eight months.
Speaking during a public address at Nyakoe Market, the Head of State revealed that the facility will be built in Suneka, responding to long-standing calls from residents for improved air transport access.
He further noted that groundwork will begin almost immediately, with a runway launch scheduled within days.
According to the President, the initial phase of the airport development will start with the commissioning of a runway this week.
He explained that the project is meant to open up the region and make air travel more accessible to residents who have long relied on road transport.
Once complete, the airport is expected to connect Kisii to other parts of the country and international destinations.
The airport announcement came alongside a series of infrastructure commitments during Ruto’s tour of Kisii and Nyamira counties.
Among them is a KSh300 million Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus planned for the area, aimed at improving transport connectivity and trade.
The President also launched several development initiatives, including the expansion and upgrading of Gusii Stadium.
In addition to transport projects, the government presented Shabana FC with a new team bus as part of sports support in the region.
Ruto also laid foundation stones for key projects such as Ikonge Modern Market and Nyamira University College.
Health services were also highlighted, with a pledge of KSh1 billion to upgrade Nyamira County Referral Hospital, alongside plans for a new KSh900 million stadium in Nyamira County.
The President used the tour to highlight his administration’s development record, urging residents to consider ongoing projects when making future political decisions.
He also dismissed criticism from opposition leaders, insisting that his government remains focused on delivery rather than political attacks.
Ruto was accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Kisii Governor Simba Arati, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, and other leaders during the visit.
The Abagusii region is traditionally seen as an opposition-leaning area, with strong influence from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
It is also the home region of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i, who is among those expected to contest for the presidency in 2027.
