  • Bernard Cheruiyot died at Keringet Police Station in Nakuru County under disputed circumstances.
  • IPOA has opened an investigation and recorded statements from ten inmates who shared the cell with him.
  • Police claim Cheruiyot hit his head against a wall, while the family rejects this explanation.
  • He was rushed to Keringet Sub-County Hospital but died during treatment.

The family of Bernard Cheruiyot is calling for a full investigation into his death at Keringet Police Station in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County. They insist the police must be held responsible, rejecting claims that the injuries were self-inflicted.

Cheruiyot was reportedly taken to the station following a dispute over Ksh. 10 at a shop in Kimororoch village, a situation that has now escalated into a major concern for detainee safety.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has stepped in to probe the circumstances surrounding Cheruiyot’s death. Investigators have already recorded statements from ten inmates who were held in the same cell to determine the events leading up to the fatal incident.

This inquiry comes amid broader concerns over police accountability and the treatment of detainees in custody.

Nakuru County Police Commander Samuel Boit said the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) reported that Cheruiyot had allegedly hit his head on a wall while in custody. He was found unconscious and rushed to Keringet Sub-County Hospital, where he later died.

Police maintain this account, though Cheruiyot’s family disputes it, questioning how a minor arrest could result in a fatality.

Cheruiyot’s death has drawn attention to the safety of individuals in police custody and the need for transparent investigations. Family members and residents are urging authorities to ensure justice is served and measures are taken to prevent similar incidents.

The IPOA investigation continues as the community and human rights advocates watch closely for answers and accountability.
