Three officers attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) are recovering after an explosive device hit their vehicle in Fafi Subcounty, Garissa County.

Police said the incident occurred at about 6:33 am on February 23, 2026, in the Harbole area. The officers were on official duty when their vehicle triggered a bomb that had been planted beneath the road surface.

The explosion left the officers injured and badly damaged the vehicle they were using.

According to security reports, the officers had left the GSU Fafi Operations Camp and were heading out in a water bowser to look for water. As the vehicle moved along the road, it passed over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that had been buried underground.

The device exploded instantly, tearing into the front part of the bowser and destroying the engine section.

An escort team travelling in a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, identified as MRAP 5170, quickly responded after the blast. The team secured the scene and organized evacuation for the injured officers.

The three wounded officers were taken to a nearby dispensary, where they received first aid and were stabilised.

Police confirmed that arrangements were being made to airlift them to Nairobi for specialised medical treatment. Their condition has not been publicly detailed, but authorities said they are under medical care.

Security officials suspect that the attack was carried out by militants linked to al-Shabaab, a group known to stage such attacks in border regions.

Parts of Garissa County, especially areas close to the Kenya-Somalia border, have remained under close watch due to the presence of extremist elements who cross over from Somalia.

The region is currently under a multi-agency security operation aimed at eliminating militant activity. While previous efforts had helped lower the number of attacks, authorities say there has been a recent rise in terror incidents.

Following the explosion, security agencies stepped up patrols and surveillance in Fafi and sthe urrounding areas.

Officials have maintained that they remain alert and committed to safeguarding residents and security personnel working near the border.

Investigations into the attack are ongoing as officers pursue those behind the incident.
