ODM leader Oburu Oginga has made it clear that his party is interested in the Deputy President position in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Wednesday, February 11, Oburu said earlier remarks about the seat had been misunderstood. He stressed that ODM has not abandoned its ambition to contest for the post.

According to him, the Deputy President’s role remains a key political target for the party as it plans for the next election cycle.

Oburu dismissed claims that ODM is engaged in a personal fight with the current Deputy President, Kithure Kindiki.

He explained that the seat belongs to the people and is open for political competition, adding that there is no personal hostility between the party and the office holder.

During the launch of the Nyota programme in Kisumu, Oburu stated that negotiations will focus on securing what benefits ODM supporters and Kenyans at large.

The ODM leader defended the party’s cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration, saying the decision was influenced by changing political realities.

He noted that ODM is currently working with UDA in what he described as a broad-based government arrangement.

Oburu said the move followed years of political rivalry and shifts within the opposition landscape, which forced the party to adjust its strategy.

Oburu also criticised former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing him of sidelining ODM despite past cooperation after the handshake with Raila Odinga.

He claimed that ODM did not receive cabinet representation during that period and alleged that promises made to Raila were not fulfilled.

Oburu further argued that the 2022 election outcome went unchallenged at a critical moment.

In his remarks, Oburu urged the former president to allow ODM to chart its own political path.

He maintained that the party is focused on its plans and should be free to make independent decisions without outside influence.

As political realignments continue ahead of 2027, ODM appears determined to strengthen its position and remain a key player in national politics.
