- Junet Mohamed says ODM will not work with Rigathi Gachagua’s party
- He accuses the former DP of promoting division and ethnic politics
- ODM says talks on backing Ruto in 2027 are still at an early stage
- Kalonzo Musyoka praised for loyalty, but no endorsement given
Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has firmly dismissed any chance of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) holding talks with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Wednesday, the ODM lawmaker said Gachagua’s political approach makes cooperation impossible.
Junet ruled out engagement with Gachagua’s Democratic Change Party (DCP), saying the former DP’s record and public statements leave no room for dialogue.
He pointed out that Gachagua remains the only impeached deputy president in the region, a factor he said cannot be ignored in serious political talks.
The National Assembly Minority Leader accused Gachagua of pushing ethnic-based politics that split Kenyans instead of uniting them.
Junet said repeated remarks about communities, political “shares,” and questions of belonging have deepened divisions, making trust and cooperation difficult.
Despite his tough stance on Gachagua, Junet admitted that politics often changes quickly.
He noted that alliances can shift over time, with rivals becoming partners and allies parting ways, depending on political interests and negotiations.
When asked whether ODM would back President William Ruto in 2027, Junet said discussions are still ongoing.
He explained that no final decision has been made and that ODM will only commit if talks produce clear and fair terms.
Junet also addressed questions about Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who previously supported Raila Odinga in several elections.
He described Kalonzo as loyal and dependable, but clarified that past support does not automatically translate into future backing.
According to Junet, earlier coalitions were formed for specific elections and ended when they failed to form a government.
He said any new alliance must be built afresh, based on current talks and shared goals, not past arrangements.
Junet concluded by saying that if Kalonzo seeks ODM’s support, he must formally approach the party leadership.
He added that, so far, no such request has been made, leaving ODM’s 2027 path wide open as talks continue.
