- President Ruto confirms Kenya and Uganda will jointly hold shares in Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) after privatisation.
- Kenya to retain 35% stake; Uganda and other regional investors to co-invest.
- Privatisation set to conclude through an IPO by March 31, 2026.
President William Ruto confirmed that Kenya and Uganda will jointly hold shares in the Kenya Pipeline Company once the ongoing privatisation is complete. The announcement came during an investment tour in Uganda, following a joint ministerial meeting in Nairobi where both governments approved frameworks for shared ownership of strategic infrastructure.
Under the plan, Kenya will divest 65% of its stake in KPC while retaining 35%, enabling Uganda and other regional investors to participate. The privatisation will be completed through an Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the Nairobi Securities Exchange by March 31, 2026.
“The government of Uganda is prepared to co-invest with us because KPC is not just a Kenyan facility but a regional facility,” Ruto said, emphasising the benefits of diversified earnings and wider participation in critical infrastructure.
Ruto also announced plans to extend the KPC pipeline from Eldoret through Kampala to the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The project aims to improve energy distribution, strengthen logistics, and enhance economic collaboration across the region.
In addition, Uganda President Yoweri Museveni confirmed his government’s readiness to extend the Standard Gauge Railway from Naivasha to Kampala, connecting with the existing line from Malaba and further linking to the DRC. Ruto noted that this rail expansion would boost trade, improve transport efficiency, and deepen Kenya-Uganda ties.
These initiatives form part of a broader strategy to promote regional integration and joint ownership of key infrastructure. President Museveni praised Ruto for his visionary pan-African approach, highlighting the importance of inter-regional development in strengthening East Africa’s economic landscape.
