They said I would never make it, now they whisper my name in fear

I was born in a small village in Western Kenya, where everyone knows everyone  and jealousy spreads faster than news. From a young age, I always dreamt of becoming something bigger than the poverty that surrounded us. But in my village, dreaming is like committing a sin. People don’t like to see someone trying to rise.

After finishing campus, I returned home to look for opportunities, but all I got were sneers and whispers. “Huyo anaringa,” they’d say. “Atarudi hapa alime kama sisi.” Those words pierced deeper than any knife. My own relatives began avoiding me. Whenever I tried to start a business, it would fail mysteriously. If I got a job interview, something would go wrong at the last minute. It was as if bad luck followed me everywhere.

At first, I thought it was normal struggle. But when my phone was stolen on the very day I received a call for a job offer, I knew it wasn’t coincidence. Something spiritual was stopping me, blocking me.

Even worse, people in the village started mocking me openly. “You see, he went to school but has nothing to show for it!” one woman said at the market while laughing with others.
