Kenya is mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away in India after suffering a cardiac arrest on the morning of Wednesday, October 15.
According to medical reports, Raila collapsed during a morning walk and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at around 9:52 a.m. Indian time. Officials from Kerala’s Ernakulam district confirmed that the cardiac arrest was sudden and that all efforts to save his life were unsuccessful.
Raila had travelled to Koothattukulam, India, for specialised Ayurvedic treatment, accompanied by his daughter and other family members.
Raila’s passing marks the end of a remarkable political journey that spanned more than four decades. He was widely known for his relentless fight for democracy, justice, and good governance.
Throughout his career, Raila inspired both admiration and criticism but remained a central figure in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.
Tributes continue to pour in from across the world as leaders and citizens remember Raila as a visionary, a patriot, and a dedicated servant of the nation.
Among the many memories resurfacing is a heartfelt message he recently wrote to his wife, Ida Odinga, on her birthday — expressing love, patience, and gratitude for her support throughout their marriage. His words now carry an even deeper meaning following his passing.
Preparations are underway to repatriate Raila’s body to Kenya, where he is expected to be accorded a state funeral.
His final words to Ida and his lifelong devotion to Kenya will remain in the hearts of millions for generations to come
