Devamatha Hospital, located in Koothattukulam, Kerala, has drawn global attention following the passing of Kenyan opposition leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on October 15.
Established in 1975 in memory of Venerable Mar Thomas Kurialacherry, the institution stands as one of central Kerala’s leading healthcare facilities. With 250 beds, including 100 fully functional ones, the hospital boasts modern diagnostic and treatment units that cater to both local and international patients.
Its operations are supported by a team of 25 senior doctors, 74 nurses, and over 130 support and paramedical staff, ensuring 24-hour emergency and trauma care services.
The hospital’s founding vision, inspired by Catholic values of service and compassion, continues to shape its healthcare philosophy.
Alongside its medical services, Devamatha runs community health outreach programs, a hospice for the elderly, and regular medical seminars. The founders, Mar Thomas Kurialacherry and Mother Mary Francesca De Chantal, are celebrated for their devotion to humanity and affordable healthcare for all.
Reports indicate that Raila Odinga collapsed during a morning walk and was rushed to Devamatha Hospital, where doctors made every effort to save his life. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
His remains are currently preserved at the hospital’s mortuary, which includes a modern deep-freezing system designed for international standards of body preservation.
Devamatha Hospital is NABH-accredited and offers specialties such as Cardiology, Neurology, Oncology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, and Urology. It also provides 24-hour laboratory, pharmacy, and trauma care services.
Raila Odinga, fondly called “Baba,” was a central figure in Kenyan politics for decades. A symbol of democracy, unity, and reform, he served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 under the Grand Coalition Government.
Though he sought the presidency five times, his influence extended far beyond electoral contests, shaping Kenya’s political identity and inspiring millions.
His passing has left Kenya and Africa in mourning, as tributes pour in for a man remembered for his resilience, patriotism, and lifelong pursuit of justice.
