The government has disbursed Sh4 billion to the Social Health Authority (SHA) to finance medical cover for public servants under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).
Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku said the move demonstrates the government’s resolve to improve the welfare of workers by cushioning them against high medical costs.
Speaking at the annual ACK Women’s Union service at ACK St. Peter’s Cathedral in Siakago, Mbeere North, CS Ruku called on Kenyans to fully embrace the SHA.
“This is a transformative step toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC),” he said, adding that about 30,000 Kenyans are enrolling daily in the new health scheme.
SHA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mercy Mwangangi confirmed on Friday that the Authority had already received the Sh4 billion allocation.
“This funding ensures that public servants will be fully covered under SHIF, protecting them from the burden of high out-of-pocket medical expenses,” CS Ruku noted.
The government has stepped up efforts to roll out UHC, with the SHA expected to play a central role in ensuring every Kenyan can access affordable and quality healthcare.
