Nairobi County authorities have launched an aggressive crackdown on gangs behind the rising insecurity in the Central Business District. Environment CEC Geoffrey Mosiria said officers arrested a man linked to a group posing as street families and found him carrying police handcuffs.
“We arrested him, and he is now in custody awaiting arraignment. We are also working to clear illegal structures that criminals use as hideouts,” Mosiria confirmed.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed police to step up operations against violent gangs, many of which are linked to groups disguising themselves as street children. Police said 214 suspects have already been arrested and will face trial.
Nairobi County Police Commander George Seda cautioned TikTok creators against posting misleading videos of crime incidents for clout, saying such content undermines public trust.
Residents and traders have reported being trailed, robbed, or harassed in daylight. On Kimathi Street, shopkeepers said gangs throw hospital waste such as syringes to scare victims.
“These boys use syringes to scare us,” said Nicholas Kogi, a trader.
Pedestrians on Moi Avenue also described walking in fear, while a night guard recounted being attacked by knife-wielding youths. Phones, laptops, and cash remain the main targets, with gangs escaping on motorcycles despite CCTV surveillance.
Authorities say the operation will continue until security is restored. Police have assured Nairobians that enforcement will remain intense to dismantle the gangs.
