  • Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja avoided impeachment after apologising to MCAs.
  • Raila Odinga and President Ruto intervened, asking MCAs to suspend the ouster.
  • MCAs agreed but warned that their patience is limited to two months.
  • The governor pledged to rebuild relations with the County Assembly.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has narrowly escaped being impeached after he apologised to Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) and promised to change his leadership style.

The governor admitted mistakes and pledged to address grievances raised by ward representatives. His move softened hardline stances that had been building against him.

Earlier in the day, Sakaja attended a meeting called by ODM leader Raila Odinga at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation. Raila asked Azimio MCAs to give the governor another chance, warning that an impeachment at this stage would hand political gains to the opposition.

Nairobi West MCA Rex Omolleh said:

“We agreed to give him another chance after guidance from our party leader. The governor has admitted mistakes, and we expect him to change course.”

Later, Sakaja joined President William Ruto and UDA MCAs at State House. The President asked them to suspend the impeachment move, stressing that such an action would destabilise the capital city.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, however, warned that MCAs are only holding off temporarily.

“He has been spared this time, but if he fails to deliver, the process will resume.”

For now, the motion has been shelved for up to two months. Sakaja promised to work more closely with the Assembly, signalling a possible reset in his strained relationship with the city legislators.
