President William Ruto has commended the Harambee Stars for their spirited performance at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), saying the team has inspired the nation despite exiting at the quarter-final stage.
In a statement released on Saturday, the President praised the squad for their resilience, courage, and unity during Kenya’s debut in the tournament, co-hosted with Tanzania and Uganda under the Pamoja CHAN initiative.
“We had a remarkable run. The Harambee Stars have silenced doubters, lifted the spirit of a nation, and reminded us that when Kenyans play with courage, confidence, and determination, nothing is impossible,” said President Ruto.
Kenya’s campaign ended in heartbreak on Friday after a penalty shootout defeat to Madagascar at Kasarani Stadium, following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
The President noted that although the loss was painful, it does not diminish the team’s achievements.
“Yes, we bowed out at the quarter-finals, but we fought valiantly to the very end. To lose in the lottery of penalties is no dishonour; to push the contest to such a finish is itself a badge of greatness,” he stated.
He also congratulated Madagascar for their win while emphasising that the Stars had brought joy and pride to Kenyans.
President Ruto urged Kenyans to continue supporting the team as it prepares for future tournaments, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host.
“For our boys, the journey does not end here. Kenya shall rise. Kenya shall triumph,” he affirmed.
