Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars, is enjoying historic financial rewards following their strong run at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). Each player has already taken home around Ksh5 million since the start of the tournament.

President William Ruto has been at the forefront of rewarding the team, pledging Ksh1 million for every win and Ksh500,000 for every draw. From two victories and one draw in the group stage, each player has received Ksh2.5 million. The team was also awarded Ksh60 million for reaching the quarter-finals, with every squad member set to pocket about Ksh2.2 million from that bonus.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga joined in by pledging KSh500,000 for each player. This raised the individual earnings from the tournament to nearly Ksh3 million before factoring in other bonuses.

Mumias East MP Peter Salasya singled out goalkeeper Byrne Omondi for praise after his key role in the 1-0 win against Morocco. He promised to pay Omondi’s house rent for three months, saying the goalkeeper’s composure deserved special recognition. Salasya also outlined an ambitious plan for player welfare if he wins the 2027 presidency, including binding contracts, medical cover, retirement benefits of Ksh70,000 monthly, and starting salaries of Ksh450,000.

Before Kenya’s decisive group match against Zambia, President Ruto announced even bigger incentives: Ksh2.5 million per player and staff for a win, as well as houses under the Affordable Housing Programme if Harambee Stars make it past the quarter-finals.

The multiple rewards from political leaders and fans show how much Harambee Stars’ achievements are being celebrated. Individual brilliance, such as Byrne Omondi’s heroics, is shining alongside the team’s collective success on the continental stage.
