On Monday, football trainer Mbarak Swaleh, popularly known as “Coaches,” was arraigned before Senior Resident Magistrate David Odhiambo. He faced a defilement charge under Section 8(1) as read with Section 8(3) of the Sexual Offences Act No. 3 of 2006, with an alternative count of committing an indecent act with a child.

The prosecution told the court that Swaleh abused a Grade Six pupil on several occasions between January and August 14, 2025, at Fort Jesus football field in Mvita Sub-County. He allegedly tricked the child into a storeroom under the pretext of collecting training gear, where the abuse took place.

According to the charges, Swaleh applied a substance he called “power shot oil” on the boy, claiming it would boost his athletic ability, before escalating the assault.

The abuse came to light on August 16, when the boy disclosed the ordeal to his mother. She later convened other coaches, where the child repeated the story in their presence. The matter was reported to the police, and medical examinations confirmed the boy had been abused.

Swaleh denied both charges. Magistrate Odhiambo released him on a bond of Sh500,000 with a surety of the same amount. He was also ordered to provide two contact persons to guarantee his court attendance.

The case is scheduled for mention on September 8, 2025.
