  • CAF freezes ticket sales for all Kasarani matches after August 10 chaos.
  • Issues: broken gates, ticketless fans, overcrowding, tear gas, and media centre breach.
  • FKF has already been fined over KSh 4 million for repeated safety violations.
  • Footage shows fans forcing entry after buying fake tickets.
  • CAF warns of possible harsher sanctions, including moving matches.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suspended all ticket sales for Kasarani Stadium, including next Sunday’s Kenya vs Zambia match, following serious security lapses during Kenya’s clash with Morocco in the CHAN 2024 qualifiers. The August 10 game saw broken gates, gate-crashers, overcrowding, and even the media centre was invaded. Tear gas had to be deployed.

Kenyan fans have turned up in record numbers, but safety breaches are becoming routine. CAF has already fined the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) several times this campaign, including nearly KSh 2.5 million after the Kenya vs DR Congo game and the Angola vs Morocco match earlier this year.

Just three days before the Morocco fixture, FKF was hit with another KSh 1.78 million fine for problems in the 1-1 draw against Angola, from ticketless entries to VIP mishandling and flares in the stands.

Videos shared online show fans breaking through barricades and scaling walls after claiming they bought genuine tickets from fraudulent sellers. The stadium was visibly over capacity, with supporters filling staircases and standing zones, both banned under CAF’s Safety and Security Regulations.

CAF’s investigation could result in more fines or tougher penalties. Officials have warned that if safety issues persist, Kenya’s home matches could be shifted away from Nairobi altogether.
