  • Kenya is now using VAR and goal-line technology for the first time in football history.
  • These systems are already in place at Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums in Nairobi.
  • The technology will first be used during CHAN 2025, then later for AFCON 2027 and local matches.
  • Kasarani Stadium has been fully upgraded, including new seats, LED screens, and modern changing rooms.
  • Nyayo Stadium has improved its lighting, press area, pitch, and fan experience.

Kenya has taken a major step in football by installing Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and goal-line technology at two main stadiums, Kasarani and Nyayo. These digital tools are set to help referees make better decisions during matches and bring Kenya closer to international football standards.

The country will debut this technology during the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which kicks off in August 2025, and it will remain in use for future tournaments like AFCON 2027.

Kasarani

The stadium will host Group A matches, including Kenya’s opening game against DR Congo on August 3. The final, the quarterfinal, and even training sessions for Harambee Stars will also happen here.

The upgrades are major: VIP and VVIP seats are now soft and foldable, with cup holders. A modern Presidential Box has been set up for top dignitaries. Giant LED screens and VAR equipment have already been fitted. Changing rooms have lockers with USB ports, massage tables, and gym sections. Artificial turf covers the sides of the pitch while waiting for the new running track. Safety measures and facilities for people with disabilities are already in place. New sprinklers, first aid rooms, anti-doping zones, and turnstiles are now working.

Nyayo

Just like Kasarani, Nyayo Stadium has seen major changes. The floodlights are now working, allowing games to be played at night. A new media centre can now hold 86 journalists, complete with workspaces. The pitch, tunnel, and referees’ rooms have been fixed and polished. Digital billboards and movable goalposts have been installed. The parking area and surroundings have been improved and made neat.

The VAR and goal-line tech will not just serve CHAN. After the tournament, these systems will stay in Kenya and be used in the Kenyan Premier League and other competitions.

This shows Kenya is serious about improving its football and making sure referees have the tools they need to get decisions right.

Sports CS Salim Mvurya said:
“The VAR and goal-line tech show that we are ready to match global football standards.”

Kenya is now in a new era of football. With tech in place and stadiums upgraded, fans can expect better matches, fairer results, and world-class experiences. From CHAN 2025 to AFCON 2027 and beyond, the country is ready to host Africa and the world.
