- Arrested at his Lukenya home on July 19 by DCI officers
- Accused of facilitating terror activities during the June 25 protests
- Police seized laptops, phones, notebooks, tear gas canisters, and blank ammo
- To be charged with terror facilitation and illegal possession of ammunition
- Critics say the State is trying to silence dissenters
Prominent activist and photojournalist Boniface Mwangi was arrested on Saturday, July 19, at his home in Lukenya, Machakos County, over claims of facilitating terrorist activities during the Gen Z-led protests on June 25.
According to police, Mwangi is under investigation for his alleged role in funding and organising the protests, which turned chaotic in several towns. DCI officers confiscated two phones, a laptop, and notebooks from his home. He was later taken to his Mageuzi Hub office in Hurlingham, where a further search uncovered external hard drives, laptops, company seals, and even tear gas canisters, as well as a 7.62mm blank round.
Mwangi is now being held at Pangani Police Station and is expected in court on Monday, July 21, where he’ll face charges related to facilitating terrorist acts and illegal ammunition possession.
“They’re now calling protest leaders terrorists. But we won’t be silenced,” a close ally said off record.
The arrest has sparked public outrage and fears of a State crackdown on activists and dissenters. Critics warn that the State is misusing terrorism laws to target outspoken citizens.
