President William Ruto has announced a major jobs expansion targeting young people under the Climate WorX and Affordable Housing programmes.

Speaking on Thursday, July 17, 2025, during a tour of Soweto in Nairobi, Ruto said his government was determined to tackle unemployment among youth by scaling up job opportunities.

“Currently, I have at least 20,000 youth working in the Climate WorX initiative, but on Monday, July 21, 2025, I will double the number to 40,000,” Ruto said.

He added that the affordable housing programme would now accommodate even more young workers across the country.

“We have youth working in housing and markets across the country, about 300,000. I have instructed the CS and PS to raise that to 600,000 in three months,” he declared.

Ruto also revealed new infrastructure projects lined up for the Jacaranda area. These include a stadium, school, hospital and social hall, expected to begin in September 2025.

“In September, I will be coming back to begin the construction of a stadium here in Jacaranda alongside a school, hospital and a social hall,” he said.

Facing growing public pressure over youth joblessness, Ruto defended his record, arguing that the unemployment crisis existed before his term.

“I understand that we still have a significant majority of the youth who are unemployed… but I am the only president with a solid plan to fix it,” he said.

He further pointed to overseas job placements as part of his administration’s efforts to ease the pressure.

Climate WorX involves river clean-ups, tree planting, and creation of green corridors to restore the environment while creating green jobs. The Affordable Housing Programme has also been framed as a major tool for youth empowerment through construction-related jobs.

Both programmes have become central to Ruto’s employment and development agenda.
