  • Crime scene expert confirms shots were fired by police on June 20 near Mama Ngina Street.
  • A damaged bullet found at the scene tested as live ammunition.
  • Blood swabs from the ground matched Rex Masai’s DNA.
  • Findings contradict earlier testimony by the former OCPD.
  • Masai was shot during anti-tax protests and died shortly after at Bliss Hospital.

The inquest into the death of Rex Masai, the young man shot during June’s anti-tax demonstrations, resumed at the Milimani Law Courts with new evidence from a government crime scene investigator.

Paul Njihia, the forensic officer who handled the scene, told the court that officers indeed fired live bullets along Mama Ngina Street on June 20, 2024, the same day Rex was killed.

Njihia produced photographs and a crime scene sketch showing how the shooting unfolded. He said that one damaged bullet was collected from the location, and a ballistic report later confirmed that it was live ammunition.

This evidence contradicted earlier claims made in court by the former OCPD, who had denied that police used live bullets during the protests.

The forensic team also recovered blood samples at the scene, which were positively matched to Rex Masai’s DNA, confirming that the shooting occurred right where the protesters had gathered.

Rex, identified as Rex Kanyike Masai, was shot in the city centre as police clashed with demonstrators protesting against the Finance Bill.

After being shot, Rex was rushed to Bliss Hospital along Moi Avenue, but sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The inquest continues, with more witnesses expected to shed light on the events surrounding his death.
