The County Government of Kiambu and the Judiciary of Kenya have launched a joint initiative to rebuild the Kikuyu Law Courts, following a devastating fire that razed the facility in what authorities suspect to be an arson attack.

The courts, which serve Kikuyu Sub-County and surrounding areas, were a key legal service point for thousands of residents. Their destruction caused significant disruption to access to justice in the region.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi today hosted a high-profile delegation from the Judiciary at the county headquarters to outline the way forward. The team was led by Kiambu Presiding Judge Lady Justice Abigail Mushila, Kikuyu Law Courts Chief Magistrate Hon. Liz Gicheha, and Law Society of Kenya Kiambu Chapter Chairperson Ms. Beth Fundi.

“This is a vital step towards restoring essential public services for the people of Kikuyu. Our collaboration with the Judiciary and legal fraternity underlines our shared commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring uninterrupted access to justice,” said Governor Wamatangi.

He confirmed that the county would reconstruct the law courts alongside the Kikuyu Municipality administration block, which was also affected by the fire.

Justice Mushila welcomed the county’s swift action and emphasised the need to fast-track rebuilding to prevent further backlog in cases and delay in court operations.

“We’re grateful for the county’s support and looking forward to a quick turnaround. Justice delayed is justice denied,” she said.

In the meantime, plans are underway to set up temporary court facilities to ensure continued service delivery to the public as construction progresses.

The incident has renewed calls for improved security and resilience of public infrastructure. Investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing, with authorities treating it as suspected arson.

Both the county and the Judiciary have promised to enhance safety protocols to prevent such occurrences in the future, even as they rally stakeholders to restore essential justice services.
