President William Ruto has honoured former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon with the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart, the country’s highest civilian award. The recognition was presented in appreciation of Ban’s decades of leadership on global peace, human rights, and sustainable development.
In a statement from the State House, President Ruto commended Ban for his visionary leadership during his time at the UN, especially in spotlighting climate change as a pressing global challenge.
“Your voice on climate justice gave urgency to issues that matter deeply to Africa,” said Ruto, highlighting Ban’s role in the historic 2007 UN Climate Change Summit.
Ruto also pointed to Ban’s key reforms in the UN system which strengthened global responses to major crises including disease outbreaks and economic shocks. The president acknowledged that Africa saw tangible benefits from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) championed during Ban’s tenure.
Ban’s fight for gender justice also featured prominently in the tribute. President Ruto lauded his efforts to form UN Women and support campaigns addressing violence against women, efforts that pushed inclusive development forward across the globe.
The award comes just before the groundbreaking of the Global Centre on Adaptation (GCA) headquarters in Nairobi, a project closely aligned with Ban’s climate agenda.
“The GCA symbolises a joint commitment to build resilience and protect the planet,” Ruto remarked.
President Ruto closed the tribute by celebrating Ban’s legacy of selfless service to humanity, adding that the award is a gesture of Kenya’s deep appreciation.
“Kenya is proud to honour you,” said Ruto. “Your work continues to inspire nations, and this award is a token of the world’s gratitude.”
