Former Chief Justice David Maraga has criticised the government over its handling of ongoing protests, following the shocking shooting of Boniface Kariuki. Maraga, who is eyeing the presidency in 2027, called Tuesday “a tragic day for Kenya,” describing Kariuki’s death as “a cold, inhumane execution.”
Maraga claimed that rogue police officers, in collaboration with armed civilians on motorbikes, were behind violent attacks targeting innocent protestors. He pointed out that these men, some armed with crude weapons, were seen working in sync with police.
“These are state-sponsored militias. They are not acting alone—they are protected, coordinated and unleashed on peaceful citizens,” said Maraga in his Tuesday evening statement.
His remarks follow growing public anger after the death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody and the continued clampdown on protestors across major towns. The Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNCHR) has already confirmed that at least 22 people have lost their lives to police bullets and protest-related violence.
Maraga questioned the government’s priorities, especially its decision to send officers to Haiti for peacekeeping missions while allegedly turning weapons on its people at home. He termed the actions “barbaric” and “contradictory to Kenya’s values.”
“This government is using tactics meant for enemies on its youth,” he noted.
The former Chief Justice also saluted Kenya’s young generation, praising their courage and creativity in standing up against injustice. He assured them that their resistance is being noticed.
“Your voices matter. Your struggle is for the soul of Kenya—and it is not in vain,” Maraga said.
Concluding his powerful message, Maraga stated that the current administration has lost moral authority to lead. He said talks are already ongoing among progressive citizens to reimagine the country’s leadership and restore its democratic values.
“It’s time to rebuild Kenya based on humanity, justice, and the rule of law,” he affirmed.
