  • Nairobi County will pay for all hospital, mortuary, and burial costs of the fire victims.
  • Governor Sakaja announced full support during a visit to the affected community.
  • The morning blaze left many families without homes and belongings.
  • Sakaja called for safe power connections in slums to stop recurring fires.
  • Investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has pledged that families affected by the tragic fire will not shoulder any financial costs. He spoke while attending a church service held near the scene of the tragedy, bringing comfort and assurance to the grieving community.

“We will clear hospital bills, cover mortuary charges, and handle the burial arrangements. No family should go through this pain alone,” he said, promising county support through every step of the recovery.

The county government will also provide coffins and take part in burial planning, helping families begin the journey toward healing. Sakaja emphasized that helping them rebuild will remain a top priority.

Call for Safer Power Access as Cause Probed

The early morning fire, which broke out around 5am, destroyed many homes and left scores of residents displaced in the congested area. As emergency teams continue to investigate what triggered the blaze, attention is now turning to a larger problem.

Governor Sakaja warned that unless safe electricity systems are introduced in informal areas, such disasters will keep happening. “The problem is illegal power connections. This has become a ticking time bomb in our slums. We need to adopt tested global models for safe access,” he said.

Bodies of the victims have been taken to City Mortuary for identification and post-mortem. Meanwhile, the county is working closely with other agencies to determine the cause and prevent such incidents in the future.

The tragedy has once again brought focus on Nairobi’s planning challenges and the urgent need for proper infrastructure in its growing informal settlements.
