Prof. Ndemo Declines UoN VC Role Amid Irregularity Claims Despite Confirmation Letter

  • Prof. Ndemo was named the next University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor via a letter dated May 5, 2025.
  • He was set to replace Prof. Hutchinson, with Prof. Mulaa holding the position in the interim.
  • Ndemo questioned the legality of the appointment process and sought clarity from the Education Ministry.
  • Despite earlier acceptance, he has now stepped away from the appointment.
  • The Council cited a need to avoid leadership gaps during the transition.
  • Ndemo is widely known for his roles in government, academia, and tech innovation in Kenya.

The University of Nairobi Council, through a letter signed by Chairman Prof. Amukowa Anangwe on May 5, 2025, announced that Prof. Bitange Ndemo had been selected as the next Vice Chancellor. He was expected to take over from Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson, who was serving in an acting capacity.

Interim VC Appointed During Transition

Since Prof. Ndemo is still finalizing his ambassadorial duties in Brussels, the Council appointed Prof. Francis Jackim Mulaa, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, as the Acting VC for a temporary period of six months. This was to ensure leadership continuity during the wait for Prof. Ndemo’s return.

Ndemo Raises Alarm Over the Process

However, despite the formal letter and an outpouring of public congratulations, Prof. Ndemo publicly distanced himself from the process. In a statement released on his LinkedIn, he raised concerns about transparency and legal procedures around the appointment.

Education Ministry’s Involvement Questioned

Prof. Ndemo explained that although he was among the top three interview finalists on March 21, he sought confirmation on whether the Education Cabinet Secretary had formally approved the Council’s choice. According to him, the Council Chair had assured him that documents were already submitted.

Ndemo Steps Back from the Role

Citing what he called an “unprocedural process,” Prof. Ndemo made it clear that he would no longer pursue the Vice Chancellor position. His decision came despite being regarded as a frontrunner and the Council’s preferred candidate.

Legacy in Public Service and Academia

Prof. Ndemo, a respected figure in Kenya’s academic and public service circles, previously served as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communications. He is celebrated for his work in digital innovation, policy development, and capacity building.
