Cabinet Secretary for defense Hon. Soipan Tuya, told Parliament that construction of the new Nairobi stadium has reached 37 percent. She revealed that Kshs. 2 billion has already been paid to the Chinese contractor overseeing the work, with completion expected by February 28, 2026.
Tuya made the remarks while appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Sports and Culture, where she detailed the state of the stadium projects tied to Kenya’s hosting of upcoming CHAN and AFCON tournaments.
Kasarani in Line for Major Upgrade
The Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani will be the biggest beneficiary of the facelift. A Kshs. 3.6 billion budget has been allocated for the first phase of renovations aimed at readying the venue for the CHAN games set for August this year.
Once CHAN concludes, another Kshs. 3.1 billion will be used for the second phase of upgrades to align Kasarani with the standards required for AFCON.
Nyayo and Eldoret Also in the Mix
Nyayo Stadium is also getting a new lease on life with a Kshs. 1.1 billion renovation budget. The CS reported that Kshs. 200 million has already been utilized so far.
In Eldoret, the iconic Kipchoge Keino Stadium is undergoing transformation as well. The total cost for the works is estimated at Kshs. 3.5 billion, with Kshs. 300 million already disbursed.
Training Grounds Getting a Boost
In addition to the main venues, the government is also improving training grounds. The Police Sacco Stadium is being upgraded at a cost of Kshs. 582 million, while the Ulinzi Sports Complex is undergoing work valued at Kshs. 490 million.
These venues are expected to support teams during training sessions ahead of the big tournaments.
Tuya Urges Patriotism and Responsibility
While addressing MPs, CS Tuya stressed the national value of hosting CHAN and AFCON, calling it an opportunity to boost Kenya’s global image and economic performance. She appealed to Kenyans to protect the stadiums from damage.
“This is national pride with economic returns,” Tuya said, urging fansto avoid vandalism and treat the facilities with respect.
