Kenya has officially appealed to the Vietnamese authorities to suspend the execution of Margaret Nduta Macharia, a Kenyan national facing the death penalty. Gatundu North MP Elijah Njoroge Kururia confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively engaging with Vietnam to prevent the execution.
Speaking during a TikTok Live session hosted by @viki_na_liam on Saturday, March 15, 2025, Kururia revealed that despite Kenya’s intervention, Vietnam had yet to respond to the plea.
“The President and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have reached out to Vietnam since yesterday, but as of now, no response has been received. Vietnam has remained adamant on this matter,” Kururia stated.
The MP noted that pressure from Kenyans prompted him to seek clarification on whether the President was aware of the situation. After making inquiries at the highest levels of government, he confirmed that the President is fully informed and engaged in the matter.
“I have heard many people asking whether the President is aware—yes, he is. You can relax. The Kenyan government is still waiting for a response,” Kururia assured.
While acknowledging that Vietnam has remained firm in its decision, the legislator expressed hope for a positive outcome. He emphasized that everything now depends on how the Vietnamese authorities respond to Kenya’s appeal.
“There are two possible outcomes. If they respond positively, the young lady will be saved. If they don’t, she won’t,” he stated.
With time running out, all eyes are now on Vietnam’s next move. Will Kenya’s intervention save Margaret Nduta’s life?
