The Kenyan government has introduced a set of new education reforms designed to reshape learning institutions and align qualifications with global standards. The Kenya National Qualifications Framework (General) Regulations, 2025, crafted by the Ministry of Education, focus on standardizing academic and technical training to enhance credibility and employability.
A major highlight of the reforms is the establishment of a National Qualifications Framework (NQF), which will create a centralized database for academic credentials, making qualifications more transparent and transferable. This system will also support credit accumulation and transfer, allowing students to seamlessly move between universities, colleges, and technical institutions without losing progress.
By bridging gaps between academic and vocational training, the reforms will make it easier for learners to explore multiple education pathways while ensuring their qualifications meet labour market demands. Employers, in turn, will gain a clearer understanding of job seekers’ skills and competencies, simplifying recruitment processes.
Another key feature is the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which will formally validate skills acquired outside conventional education systems. This initiative aims to certify individuals with practical experience, boosting their job prospects.
The Ministry of Education has invited public participation in refining the proposed regulations, with a 14-day window for feedback.
