MP George Kaluma Calls for End to All Forms of Circumcision in Kenya

  • Homa Bay Town MP George Kaluma calls for a nationwide ban on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and male circumcision.
  • He links FGM to rising cases of teenage pregnancies and early marriages in communities that practice it.
  • The MP questions the logic behind FGM, noting that men from such communities still marry women who haven’t undergone the practice.
  • He claims that circumcision is practiced by a minority globally and should be reconsidered in Kenya.

Homa Bay Town MP George Kaluma has called for an immediate nationwide halt to all forms of genital mutilation, including FGM and male circumcision, arguing that such practices violate the dignity of young Kenyans.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Kaluma expressed deep concern over the rise in FGM, teenage pregnancies, and early marriages, particularly in communities that practice male circumcision. He challenged the cultural justification of FGM, stating that even men from such communities prefer marrying women who haven’t undergone the procedure.

“FGM, teenage pregnancies, and early marriages are on the rise in most communities that practice male circumcision. Why should men who support FGM still flock to marry women from communities that don’t practice it if it’s good?”
