Military chiefs from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, DRC, South Sudan, and Somalia met in Nairobi to discuss ways to restore peace and security in eastern DRC.
The meeting follows directives from the East African Community and SADC Heads of State Summit held on February 8, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
“Regional leaders assigned the Chiefs of Defense Forces to provide technical guidance on resolving the conflict,” a statement read.
Security Challenges in Eastern DRC
The conflict in eastern DRC is caused by various armed groups, including:
- M23, which has captured key towns like Goma and Bukavu.
- Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan-origin rebel group causing instability in the region.
Actions Being Taken
According to the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), ADF’s strength has been significantly reduced, but some fighters remain scattered in DRC forests.
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba was accompanied by Major General James Birungi, Head of Intelligence and Defense Security, along with other senior UPDF officials.
