Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has sent condolences to the family of Wafula Chebukati, the former IEBC Chairman, who passed away on the evening of February 20, 2025, at the age of 63.

In a heartfelt message, Raila expressed his sorrow for Chebukati’s family, including his widow Mama Mary, and their son Emmanuel.

“To the family of Mr. Wafula Chebukati, my condolences and sorrow for the loss of a son, a father, a guardian. Times like these are never easy, and no amount of words and solidarity can fill the void left,” Raila stated.

He added that his thoughts and prayers were with the family during this difficult time.

A Controversial Electoral Legacy

Chebukati will be remembered for his role in overseeing Kenya’s 2017 and 2022 general elections, both of which were highly contested and resulted in Raila’s defeat.

Throughout his tenure, Chebukati faced immense political pressure, particularly from Raila’s supporters, who accused him of electoral malpractice. However, he remained resolute in upholding the IEBC’s constitutional authority.

“His insistence on conducting elections following established rules, even amid political turmoil, has left a complex legacy that extends beyond the ballot box,” political analysts note.

Despite intense scrutiny and accusations of favoritism, Chebukati stood firm in his decisions, insisting that his role was to ensure a transparent electoral process.

Mixed Reactions to His Leadership

As news of Chebukati’s passing spreads, leaders from across the political divide have shared their tributes, acknowledging his contributions to Kenya’s electoral process.

However, his tenure remains a subject of debate, with some hailing him as a defender of democracy, while others believe his leadership deepened Kenya’s political divisions.

Raila’s tribute reflects a moment of reflection on Kenya’s electoral journey, highlighting the personal and political struggles that have shaped the country’s democracy.

As Kenyans mourn Chebukati, his role in shaping Kenya’s democratic process remains both significant and contentious.
