  • Sudan recalled its ambassador to Kenya over Nairobi’s hosting of meetings involving the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
  • The Sudanese Foreign Ministry termed the meetings a “hostile move” that undermines Sudan’s sovereignty.
  • Sudan accused President William Ruto of supporting the RSF militia, calling it a threat to regional peace and security.
  • The government warned Kenya to abandon what it described as a “dangerous course” promoting terrorism and genocide.
  • This marks Sudan’s second diplomatic withdrawal from Kenya in just over a year.

For the second time, Sudan has recalled its ambassador to Kenya, protesting Nairobi’s involvement in talks perceived as an effort to establish a parallel government. The move follows Sudan’s dissatisfaction with a meeting Kenya hosted involving the RSF militia and its allies.

In a statement released on Thursday, February 20, Sudan’s Foreign Ministry accused Kenya of interfering in its internal affairs and undermining its national security.

“This represents a dangerous precedent previously unseen in both the region and the continent,” the statement read.

Accusations Against President Ruto

Sudan criticized President William Ruto, alleging that he has consistently supported the RSF militia. The government stated that Nairobi has become a hub for the militia’s political, financial, and logistical operations.

“The Kenyan President has placed his personal and commercial interests with the militia’s regional sponsors above the historical relations between the two brotherly countries,” the ministry asserted.

Sudan also referenced a past diplomatic incident in January 2024 when Ruto hosted RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo in Nairobi, which led to a previous ambassadorial recall.

Call for Kenya to Reverse Course

The Sudanese government urged Kenya to withdraw its support for the RSF and uphold regional peace. The ministry stressed that diplomatic measures are being taken to protect Sudan’s sovereignty.

“Sudan reiterates its demand for the Kenyan presidency to reverse this dangerous course of action, which threatens peace and security in the region and encourages terrorism, genocide, and horrific human rights violations,” the statement concluded.

With Sudan taking a hardline stance, diplomatic relations between the two countries remain tense. Kenyan authorities have yet to officially respond to the latest developments.
