In a bold move to maintain the sanctity of worship spaces, the Archdiocese of Nairobi, led by Archbishop Philip Anyolo, has rejected political donations from leaders, including President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja. The decision underscores the Church’s resolve to stay neutral and independent in spiritual matters.

The rejected donations included KSh 200,000 from the Governor of Nairobi, KSh 600,000 from President Ruto for parish projects, and an additional KSh 2 million for the construction of the Fathers’ house. President Ruto also pledged KSh 3 million for the same project and promised a parish bus.

The Church cited its directive against accepting political donations, noting that such contributions could compromise its independence and integrity. Archbishop Anyolo also referred to the Public Fundraising Appeals Bill 2024, which requires proper permits for fundraising to ensure transparency and accountability.

In their statement, the bishops emphasized the Church’s role as a neutral space for spiritual and community guidance, free from political agendas. Politicians, they stated, are welcome to worship as ordinary Christians but must refrain from using Church platforms for political purposes.

This stance follows the Catholic Church’s recent letter criticizing the government’s performance, prompting President Ruto to acknowledge the feedback. He pledged to address mistakes and improve his leadership.

The Archdiocese of Nairobi’s decision reinforces its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of worship spaces. By declining political donations, the Church sends a clear message about its role as a spiritual sanctuary and a voice for accountability and justice in society.
