Former US President Donald Trump was taken off stage after gunfire erupted at a rally in Pennsylvania in an assassination attempt. Pictures showed him angry and raising a hand to his right ear, before bowing – as a series of gunshots rang out.
He was soon ambushed by Secret Service agents guarding him and dragged from the stage to a waiting car. He raised his fist as he was taken into the car.
In a post on his Truth Social network, Trump said the bullet went through the “top part” of his right ear.
Earlier, his spokesman said he was “doing well” and receiving treatment at a local medical facility. “I knew right away that something was wrong because I heard a bang, a gunshot, and immediately I felt a bullet rip through the skin,” Trump wrote.
“I was bleeding profusely, so I realized what was happening.” Blood was clearly visible on Trump’s ear and face as security officers chased him.
The suspect was shot dead at the scene by Secret Service officers, agency spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. He added that one person was shot dead and two others were seriously injured.
