The saga of Kenyan politicians entangled in fake gold scandals seems never-ending. On Sunday evening, high drama unfolded at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) when DCI detectives apprehended a senator and his associates attempting to transport a dubious consignment to Burundi.
The lawmaker and his three assistants were meticulously tracked by police from Ikolomani, Kakamega County, all the way to the airport.
The intrigue began three months prior when Dickson Amwabo, a gold miner in Ikolomani, stumbled upon pure gold blocks worth about KSh 40 million. This windfall allowed him to invest in new machinery, clear his debts, and purchase land.
However, Amwabo’s newfound fortune didn’t sit well with a senator who operated in the same mining area.
Driven by jealousy and fear of competition, the senator dispatched thugs to Amwabo’s home, intent on stealing what they believed to be another cache of gold.
The armed intruders ransacked the house, making off with a sack they presumed was filled with the precious metal.
“They left us in fear,” recounted Amwabo.
