Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reportedly set his sights on Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana as a potential replacement for David de Gea, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Dutch boss, who previously worked with Onana during his tenure at Ajax, is keen on bringing the talented shot-stopper to Old Trafford.

Born in Nkol Ngok, Cameroon, Onana began his football journey at the Samuel Eto’o Foundation before joining Barcelona’s youth academy in 2010. As a minor and extracommunitary player, he was loaned out to UE Cornellà’s youth team for a season in 2012, followed by a loan spell with the first team of UD Vista Alegre for another season.

Onana’s breakthrough came when he joined Dutch giants Ajax in July 2015, with his transfer being fast-tracked in early January of that year. He made his debut for Jong Ajax in the Eerste Divisie in February 2015, showcasing his immense potential.

The talented goalkeeper signed multiple contract extensions with Ajax, the latest one in March 2019, which kept him at the club until June 2022.

In November 2019, Onana expressed his interest in playing in the Premier League, highlighting his ambition to compete in England’s top-flight competition. However, his journey faced a setback in February 2021 when he was handed a 12-month ban by UEFA after testing positive for Furosemide, a banned substance. Onana claimed that he mistakenly took his wife’s medicine and vowed to appeal the decision. In June, the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced his suspension to nine months.

Onana Inter move

The talented goalkeeper’s impressive performances have garnered interest from clubs across Europe. In January 2022, he was linked with a move to Italian Serie A side Inter Milan, signaling his potential departure from Ajax. In May 2022, Onana confirmed that he would be leaving Ajax after spending seven and a half years with the club. Throughout his tenure, he made 214 appearances in all competitions, establishing himself as a reliable presence between the posts.

With David de Gea’s future uncertain at Manchester United, the club is actively exploring options to strengthen their goalkeeping department. Erik ten Hag, who holds a high regard for Onana’s abilities, sees the 25-year-old as an ideal candidate to fill the potential void left by de Gea.
