Kisii 7s will go underway from May 5-7 at the Kisii Stadium. It will be making a third appearance as 16 teams battle for the ultimate prize of Ksh150,000. The second and third positions will be awarded Ksh100,000 and Ksh75,000 respectively.
Kisii 7s has its own memories. The tournament will be making a comeback for the first time since 2016, this time bigger and better. Seven years ago, when Homeboyz RFC won against Impala RFC in the finals, the venue was absolutely bouncing. The same is likely to be witnessed this time round, with the fans expected to electrify the atmosphere.
The great journalist Ian Wooldridge called stadiums “cathedrals of the game” and he was dead right. But what are cathedrals without congregations? Just hollow and soulless old buildings. This tournament is expected to fill the stadium to capacity, as the ever-green town witnesses quality rugby and an unforgettable experience.
One of the best things about rugby crowds and attending live rugby games is the friendly atmosphere and sense of fun you get when attending. People talk and have fun and there’s no animosity in the crowd either.
As kick-off approaches, fans will have heard the pre-rugby songs being rehearsed – Tunaomba uwepo wako uende nasi or to be accurate The Lord’s Prayer. They will also hear the loud roaring as the man and woman on the microphones warm up their tonsils.
However, adrenaline levels will hit a climax when the home teams; Kisii RFC and Kisii University lock horns. Admittedly, this match will leave a way for fans to be there on time.
The tournament will also be a family-friendly one. Parents need not to be worried about their kids. It will create ample time for families that enjoy doing these kinds of things together in a safe environment. That’s not something you get at every other type of live event.
‘Sherehe’ lovers’ can also crash and totter back and forth refilling their glasses during and after the game.
Nothing you could say could possibly kill the tension and the expectancy ahead of this tournament.
