Kenya and Spain have signed a memorandum of understanding that will see Kenyans trained in the Spanish language, while Spanish students will be trained in English.
This agreement is aimed at enhancing Spanish as a major language of study in Kenya and opening up opportunities for Kenyan youth to study abroad.
Kenya’s CS
The bilateral discussions between Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Dr Alfred Mutua and Spain’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Jose Manuel Albares, also focused on various partnerships and commitments by Spain towards Kenya. This includes funds for improving the railway system and roads, including the construction of an overpass at the Junction Mall area of Nairobi’s Ngong road.
In addition, the trade partnership between Kenya and Spain was reviewed. The two countries currently have 1,000 companies selling their products to Kenya every year. The discussions also focused on ways Kenyan products can be sold in Spain.
During the meeting, the Kenyan Minister also requested for scholarships for Kenyan students, which the Spanish government promised to provide as soon as such opportunities arise. In the meantime, an immediate exchange of diplomats to study in Spain and Kenya was agreed upon.
The ongoing war in Sudan was also discussed, with both parties emphasizing the need for a sustained cease-fire in the country. The Kenyan government requested for Spain’s support for a Nairobi-based mediation process for Sudan.
CS expresses gratitude
In a statement, the Kenyan Cabinet Secretary expressed gratitude to the Spanish government for their support and dedication to Kenya. She stated that “the Minister informed me that in their policy, Kenya is at the forefront of their relations and investment in the African continent.”
We also discussed the ongoing war in Sudan, the dynamics around it and the need for a sustained cease fire in Sudan. We requested for their support for a Nairobi based mediation process for Sudan.
