Former Harambee Stars captain, Victor Wanyama, has stated that he will not be returning to the national team until there is more professionalism demonstrated by those in charge of football in the country.

The midfielder retired from international duty in 2021 but had announced a potential comeback last December after meeting with Kenya’s sports minister Ababu Namwamba.

However, Wanyama now says that there are “more details” that need to be addressed before he will be willing to play for the Harambee Stars again. Despite this, he still hopes to “one day” play for the team again.

Kenya has had seven coaches in six years, with Turkey’s Engin Firat being the current coach. Wanyama has expressed his frustration with the constant changes, stating that “Having different coaches changing players all the time is tough.”

He further said, “I think the players deserve better treatment and more professionalism. Maybe I can come back and help the team, help the young players coming through to understand what it means to represent their country.”

Wanyama had spoken to the sports minister and the new coach, who had both asked him to return, but he stated that he needed more time to think about it. He hopes that with the current coach in charge, the team can settle down and perform better.
