Nairobi City Stars midfielder Ochieng eyeing more goals after debut goal against Mathare United

Nairobi City Stars in action.

Nairobi City Stars Midfielder Newton Ochieng is determined to score more goals in the Kenyan top flight after breaking his duck in the 3-0 win over Mathare United on March 29, 2023.

The goal came in the 86th minute when he slotted home a well-weighted pass from debutant James Mazembe to finish off a counterattack.

Speaking about his first goal in the top flight, Newton said, “It has been my daily dream to have a goal in the top flight. When I got subbed in, I knew we were going to have more goals because of the two-goal advantage we had. The urge to score was on me, especially when after (Kelvin) Etemesi broke his league silence with a brace. It inspired me to put the ball back in the net even though at that stage we were playing without two players. It feels good to score and hopefully in the coming next matches I will go in with the same urgency.”

Newton, who joined City Stars from third-tier side Vapor Sports in the offseason, has played 15 games this season and accumulated 607 minutes. In the previous game against Wazito, he provided an assist that led to Mohammed Bajaber’s winning goal in Simba wa Nairobi’s 2-1 victory.

Newton’s goal topped up Kelvin Etemesi’s brace, which were his debut goals in the Kenyan Premier League, and handed City Stars a 2-0 cushion.
