Veteran hip-hop musician Hubert Nakitare, also known as Nonini, has won a lawsuit for copyright infringement against a Japanese corporation and influencer Brian Mutinda.

The electronics company going by the name Syinix Electronics used Nonini’s tune ‘We Kamu’ without his permission in their 2022 commercial featuring digital content creators Brian Mutinda and Stacey Atieno.

The US-based musician recently declared on his social media platforms that the case had been decided in his favor.

“I have several Copyright Infringement cases in court that have been running simultaneously some for several years!  Today March 23rd 2023 will go down in history (Year of the Jordan) & is a Win for the Kenyan Music Industry Vs the people who used my song “WeKamu” to push a product.” Reads Nonini’s statement.

The judgment was delivered at the Milimani Commercial Magistrate Court with the judge stating that Nonini had successfully proven his case.

Nonini had filed the suit at Milimani Law Courts in July 2022 under case number E4007 2022.

Following that, Ksh. 1 million in general damages for copyright infringement were given to Nonini, and the defendant was ordered to remove the song’s music video from their respective social media sites.

After the verdict, Nonini stated his delight, and he now needs the money urgently, by Monday.

“Think I deserve a Whiskey si ni #Furahiday 🤣 @stevensmuendo1 lakini hope most Musician follow the lead. Make sure you copyright your material and get them split sheet’s done. It’s important #Mgenge2ru @50cent #NeedThatByMonday,” he wrote while sending a warning.

“Syinix Electronics decided to do a very brilliant advert using my song We Kamu. The only problem is they didn’t ask for permission 😬.”

The video featured Nonini’s hit song “We Kamu”, which was synchronized with the visuals without a license from the artiste.
